Joseph Pilates created the Pilates form of exercise in the 1920's. He studied Eastern and Western forms of exercise and philosophies and was greatly influenced by Grecian and Roman regimens.
Pilates combines calisthenics, yoga, gymnastics, and swimming to improve flexibility and strengthen the whole body without building bulk. Pilates created over 600 different exercises using both equipment designed specifically for this form of exercise as well as mat work.
Often called the "thinking person's" workout, the pilates form of exercise emphasizes precisely controlled movements that strengthen the pelvic, abdominal and back muscles, improve alignment and posture, and increase balance and flexibility. Throughout the workout a high level of concentration and body awareness is imperative. This form of exercise should always be approached as a mind-body regimen.
